Why Design-Build?

We sometimes receive questions on the design-build model, so we thought it would be helpful to write a blog post with more information on design-build and why we do what we do.

In this post we will cover:

  • What is design-build?

  • How does it compare to the traditional model?

  • Why we believe in design-build

  • How we work

First, a disclaimer: While we love the design-build model and it works well for our clients, we are also friends with great architects who work very successfully in the traditional model. This is not a post about why design-build is better, but about how it’s different and why we like it :)

What is design-build?

Design-build means the architecture and construction for a project are managed under the same company. It could also mean that the engineering and interior design are also managed under the same company.

How does it compare to the traditional model?

The traditional model means that the client hires and manages an architect, contractor, engineers, and an interior designer. With the design-build model, one company oversees all of it. Benefits include projects that run smoother and stay on schedule and on budget. The idea is that the client will receive a better experience.

Why we believe in design-build.

We started a design-build company because we knew there had to be a better way. After working in both the architecture and construction industries, we could see the flaws with the traditional model. It was frustrating to see the same communication, budget and schedule issues happen again and again. There was a “blame-game” scenario on many projects that seemed unnecessary. The design-build model solves these problems.

How we work.

We consider ourselves to be in the business of customer service. Providing an excellent experience for our clients is our priority and shapes our work process. That means we have effective systems in place for all our internal and external organization. We also have industry partners for all engineering and interior design needs.

Note: for more details on our process, refer to this resource page.

Beyond our process, we also keep a small and hardworking team so that all of our clients receive the same great service. This means we intentional stay small as a company and only take on a select handful of projects each year.

So that’s our take on design-build and why we love it! We hope this was helpful. If you have additional questions or a project you would like to discuss please contact us here.
