Sunset Chill
Addition + Facade Restoration | Inner Sunset, San Francisco
This project involved a primary suite attic addition and full facade restoration for a single-family pre-earthquake Victorian home in San Francisco’s Inner Sunset neighborhood.
The existing attic included a small bathroom and closet dividing two low-ceiling rooms, making the space difficult to use. Due to planning requirements, we maintained the front portion of the attic as viewed from the street, and focused the expansion toward the rear of the home.
This allowed us to create a new upper-level living space that includes a primary suite with a bedroom, walk-in closet, and large bathroom, along with a small den and access to a rear deck.
Thoughtful details throughout the space bring in natural light and highlight views, including a large window at the tub framing the Golden Gate Bridge, multiple skylights in the bathroom, and a sliding door system connecting to the deck.
At the exterior, we referenced a historic photograph to reconstruct the facade, carefully matching original trim and details. A deep blue-gray finish was applied to give the restored facade a more contemporary feel while maintaining its historic character.
The result is a thoughtfully expanded home that integrates new space with the original architecture while making full use of light, views, and volume.
